St. Theresa of Avila, Gonzales, LA
My name is Charles Hagerman. I am a parishioner here at St. Theresa of Avila. I want to speak today about Catholic in Recovery. I have been a member of this support group for the past 5 years. This is the third group I have started, the first in Slidell at Our Lady of Lourdes. The second is in New Orleans at St. Anthony of Padua, and now here.
This ministry is based on helping those who are struggling with many addictions and unhealthy attachments that we encounter in our lives. It is the aim of Catholic in Recovery to share the good News that God can bring about healing and recovery, even in the most hopeless of cases. This has been a true blessing to me and my family.
Scott Weeman founded Catholic in Recovery in 2017. It is a non-profit organization of individuals and families seeking freedom from various addictions and compulsions. Scott is now a dear friend of mine.
The solution that Catholic in Recovery offers integrates three rings of healing: Fellowship, Freedom, and Faith.
- Fellowship: In Fellowship, we do not find healing alone. Just as we are connected as members of the Body of Christ, so too are we connected in our journey toward healing from addiction.
- Freedom: We find freedom first and foremost by grounding our trust in God and his grace. However, this involves doing our part to be receptive to that grace.
- Faith: Through CIR retreats, spiritually enriched books, faith-related resources, and connecting with a vibrant community committed to Christ, we strengthen our relationship with God.
We meet every Thursday at 6 pm in the Parish Life Center. The meeting lasts about an hour and consists of prayer, the upcoming Sunday Readings, followed by discussion.
If you or someone you know needs to talk to people who will listen and understand due to their own experiences and have recovered, come join us. You can also get more information online at catholicinrecovery.com.
Once again, we meet every Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Life Center. I'll be in the back of the church after Mass if anyone has any questions.
Thank you, and may God bless you.
